I woke up this morning to a sweet and funny card, a beautiful rose, two pieces of chocolate, breakfast in bed and a great guy wishing me a Happy Valentines Day! Not a bad way to start the day and I’m not going to pretend that I did not love every bit of it and truth be told, I am a romantic at heart and I have always loved Valentines Day. For that matter, I love romantic gestures any time of the year. I am blessed and I recognize and appreciate that. With that being said, I recognize that Valentines Day, like so many other holidays, is not always a happy and celebrated day for some and with all of the commercial hype it can leave many people wondering what the meaning of Valentines Day is at all.
With yet another Valentines Day upon us, I found myself pondering the meaning of the 14th of February and of course like many things in life, it means different things to different people. Some thrive on all of the hype and the romance, some people choose to get married on this very special “love” day, kids make Valentines Day boxes and exchange Valentines Day cards with their classmates, thousands of pounds of chocolate are bought, flowers are sent and sentimental cards and gifts are exchanged. But for some, it is just another day and quite frankly, it is a day that is not enjoyed and can serve as a reminder of things that are not filled with hearts, love and romance.
There is nothing wrong with celebrating Valentines Day and it is a day that can be filled with romance, love, flowers and candy but I would like to challenge everyone to add a few thoughts to the list as you celebrate today. Valentines Day can be celebrated whether you have someone special in your life or not. To me, Valentines Day is not just about romance, hearts and candy per se, it is about LOVE and KINDNESS. There are a millions of people and of all ages to love in the world. And….I can promise you that there are a whole lot of people out there that need to feel loved.
Let’s join together and make Valentines Day a day about loving others and paying it forward. There are so many things that each and every one of us can do to be kind to others each and every day. That to me is what Valentines Day should be about. Loving others and simply being kind. It does not take much nor does it have to cost a dime. To love and be kind is priceless and it WILL make a difference in another person’s day. We have no idea what another is going through at any given moment and a simple smile or a gentle hug can literally help another human being get through one more day.
So as you celebrate this day or simply are living it as any other day, love and be kind every chance you get. If you love romance and hearts and chocolates, wonderful! Enjoy every moment of it! But remember it is also a day that ALL of us can make a little bit of an extra effort to make a difference in tiny and heartfelt ways. Pay it forward. Buy someone a cup of coffee. Tell your kids you love them and are so proud of them. Hand out carnations at a nursing home. Stand up for someone that is being bullied. Be a good friend. Volunteer somewhere and serve a hot meal to someone that is hungry and cold. Listen to someone that is hurting and needs to feel like they matter. Hug as many people as you can. Say I love you often. Just smile and say hello to everyone you pass by today. There are so many opportunities every single day to love and be kind. Be that person and make a difference. It will not only be a gift to others but to love and be kind is a gift to your heart too.
Happy Love and be Kind Day everyone! I hope that today is a blessed and happy one for you and remember you are loved.
In Peace Always,
